Frequently Asked Questions

We've been self-assessing for years. What value would we get out of external assistance?
Even where your board is operating reasonably effectively, often the use of new tools and methodologies can 'freshen' up the process. External involvement can also provide insight into the practices of other successful boards, as well as benchmark comparisons with your peers.

How do you address the nervousness some boards feel about undertaking a review?
First, we provide a step-by-step communications guide to assist the Chairman to communicate positively about the process and outcomes with directors. Cameron Ralph's involvement can provide that all-important layer of anonymity for your directors to ensure their frank and open participation

We've never done a review. How should we start?
Where you begin is a function of whether there are any specific issues for your board, the level of comfort of the directors around the process, the time you wish to commit, and the outcomes you are seeking to achieve. Cameron Ralph can work with you to develop a process which suits your needs.

How long will a review take?
Typically a review can take approximately 3 months from start to finish. Our methodology is designed to minimise the impact on directors' time - you should estimate between 1-3 hours of a directors' time, depending on the service you have selected. For the Chairman, the time required can vary widely, depending on how much of the review they wish to run themselves.

How much will it cost?
Any process that adds real value will cost both time and money. Ultimately, the cost of a board review is small in comparison to the potential impact your board can have on your organisation.

How often should a board review be done?

Many boards are undertaking a comprehensive independent review every two years, with the Chair leading a follow-up review in the intervening years. Individual Director reviews are most commonly undertaken as part of the directors renomination process.
